"Trees do everything we do to be loved, but walk"
- The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Trees, perhaps our next of kin in the construed wilderness, go through the seasons in a similar way we experience life, in stages and moods. Spring signals birth, metaphorically or figuratively, of spirit or body. Summer is a continuation of that birth, in which the zenith of growth is reached; fall allows for reflection and introspection, for withdrawing momentarily into ourselves; and finally winter rejuvenates and refreshes.
The title may be mistakenly understood as patriotic or nationalistic, actually it has quite a different significance; the title, Shades of Blue and Red signifies the many moods of life which can be characterized most abstractly by colors; varying gradients of red to represent intense or subtle moments of joy, rapture or indignation, rage; shades of blue for those calm and pensive moments of melanchoy, of loneliness, of desolation. Intuitively and subconsciously colors come to take on meanings that paint different stages of life, which I want to reflect on in these virtual pages of my inner life.
